Wincobank - Hill Fort

Iron Age univallate hillfort on an isolated sandstone hill overlooking the River Don, 2.5 miles northeast of Sheffield. The oval enclosure spans roughly 130 x 80m (1 hectare), surrounded by a ditch and stone-faced rampart with rubble core. Radiocarbon dated to c. 530-360 BC, it was likely built by the Celtic Brigantes tribe. The rampart shows dramatic vitrification from temperatures exceeding 950 degrees C, with quartz-feldspar fusion indicating deliberate high-intensity firing of timber-laced walls. It is the best-preserved vitrified hillfort in lowland England.
