Burnt Fen

Burnt Fen is a low-lying fenland area between Littleport in Cambridgeshire and Mildenhall in Suffolk, surrounded on three sides by rivers and dependent on pumped drainage. The area has produced remarkable archaeological evidence spanning the Mesolithic through the Bronze Age. Nearby at Isleham, the Isleham Hoard -- over 6,500 pieces of bronze including swords, spearheads, axes, and armor dating to c. 1150-1000 BC -- was discovered in 1959, making it the largest Bronze Age hoard ever found in England. The broader fenland region between Littleport and Shippea Hill shows extensive Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age activity.
