Cannington Camp

Cannington Camp is a univallate hillfort on an isolated 80-metre hilltop near Cannington, Somerset, England, enclosing 3.1 hectares. Originally protected by a stone wall with the main entrance to the southeast, the site shows evidence of occupation from the Mesolithic through Roman periods, including Neolithic and Bronze Age pottery, an Iron Age brooch, and late Roman ceramics. Excavations by Rahtz in 1962-63 revealed later Roman reoccupation and a nearby cemetery of approximately 400 late Roman or later graves. The site has been proposed as the location of the 878 AD Battle of Cynuit between Viking and Anglo-Saxon forces. The north side has been severely damaged by 19th- and 20th-century limestone quarrying.
