Berry Castle, Huntshaw

Berry Castle is an Iron Age hillfort in Huntshaw Wood near Weare Giffard, north Devon, occupying a promontory about 95 m above sea level overlooking the valleys of Huntshaw Water and Darracott Brook. The slight univallate defences -- a rampart bank up to 5.3 m wide and 3.8 m high with an outer ditch 4 m wide -- enclose an area 118 m by 52 m. Recent tree clearance by Clinton Devon Estates revealed a rectangular plan with entrances at either end, suggesting the site may be a Roman camp or Neolithic sky burial enclosure rather than a conventional hillfort. It is a Historic England Scheduled Monument.
