Newberry Castle

An Iron Age hillfort near Combe Martin in North Devon, England, situated on the northeastern shoulder of Newberry Hill at 110 m elevation. The earthwork enclosure features a strong curved rampart on the west with a 10 ft escarpment and 8 ft counterscarp, while the steep northern slope was considered naturally impregnable. Built by the Dumnonii, a Celtic confederation who inhabited Devon and Cornwall, the fort was part of a network of coastal hillforts connected by a ridgeway along the North Devon coast, likely serving as focal points for maritime trade.
