Beacon Castle

Beacon Castle is an Iron Age hillslope enclosure near Parracombe in Devon, England, situated at approximately 290 metres above sea level overlooking the Heddon Valley [1] [2]. The site is visible as a series of well-defined earthworks north of the summit of South Down and is interpreted as most likely an Iron Age pastoral settlement rather than a primarily defensive structure, sited for prominence and visibility toward the north [2]. On the opposite slope across the River Heddon valley, some 900 metres to the west, stands the hillfort of Voley Castle, clearly visible from Beacon Castle [2] [3].
