Shoulsbury Castle

An Iron Age hillfort on Shoulsbarrow Common near Challacombe in Devon, England, at 460 m elevation on Exmoor. The rectangular enclosure measures approximately 147 x 142 m with stone-cored ramparts and outer ditches, covering 1.6-2 hectares. Its unusually rectangular plan has prompted debate over whether it is Iron Age or Roman, dated tentatively to the 2nd-1st century BC. The inner rampart rises up to 3.6 m high, with an 11.5 m diameter circular mound in the northeast corner. The outer defenses appear deliberately unfinished on the steep southern side, and gang construction practices are visible in ditch constrictions.
