Hembury Castle, Tythecott

Hembury Castle is an Iron Age promontory hill fort near Tythecott, south of Buckland Brewer in Devon, situated at 137 metres above sea level. The defences consist of an inner rampart surrounded by a ditch and outer rampart with a single southeastern entrance. Surveys revealed traces of at least five timber round houses within the enclosure. The fort was likely used for storing and trading tin, with the nearby River Dart providing sea access. Abandoned in the mid-1st century AD, a Norman motte-and-bailey castle was built within its walls around 1070 AD.
