Also known as: Black Pyramid of Dasher, Dahshur, Pyramid of Autun

The Black Pyramid at Dahshur was built by Pharaoh Amenemhat III (r. c. 1860-1814 BC) during Egypt's Middle Kingdom. Originally about 75 metres at the base and 105 metres high, its mudbrick core clad in limestone gave it a dark, decaying appearance that earned its modern name. The pyramid was the first to house both the pharaoh and his queens in separate burial chambers connected by corridors. Built too close to sea level, groundwater infiltration caused catastrophic structural failure, with ceilings sinking by up to two inches. Amenemhat III ultimately chose to be buried at Hawara instead.
