The Pyramid of Djoser at the Saqqara necropolis is the earliest colossal stone building in Egypt, designed by Imhotep -- the world's first named architect -- for Pharaoh Djoser of the Third Dynasty around the 27th century BC. The six-tiered step pyramid originally rose approximately 62 m with a base of 109 x 121 m. Beneath it lies an underground network of galleries containing roughly 400 rooms of unprecedented complexity. The pyramid is the centerpiece of a vast mortuary complex enclosed by walls stretching over one mile, covering 15 hectares.
