Mortuary Temple of Hawara

The mortuary temple adjacent to the pyramid of Amenemhat III at Hawara in Egypt's Faiyum region was known in antiquity as the Labyrinth. Herodotus described it as containing 3,000 chambers across twelve grand courts, declaring it greater than the pyramids themselves. Strabo reported halls for every Egyptian province. Flinders Petrie's excavations beginning in 1888 confirmed the foundations of a vast complex, though centuries of quarrying had reduced it to fragments. The entire enclosure measured approximately 385 by 158 metres.
