Qasr Qaroun Temple

Qasr Qaroun is a well-preserved Ptolemaic temple built during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus in the 3rd century BCE, located about 65 km from Fayoum city in Egypt. Dedicated to Sobek-Ra, a fusion of the crocodile god Sobek and the solar god Ra, the temple stands at the center of the ancient city of Dionysias, a caravan route hub to the Bahariya Oasis. Built of yellow limestone blocks, its plain exterior conceals a maze of corridors, staircases, and chambers across multiple levels. On the winter solstice (December 21), sunlight penetrates the sanctuary to illuminate the Holy of Holies where statues of Sobek were housed.
