Κourion Ancient Amphitheatre

Greco-Roman theatre built in the late 2nd century BC in the ancient city-kingdom of Kourion on Cyprus's southwestern coast. Enlarged c. 50 AD and repaired after an earthquake in 77 AD, it seated up to 3,500 spectators. In the early 3rd century AD it was converted for wild animal combat before reverting to theatrical use by century's end. Destroyed in the catastrophic 365 AD earthquake, it was excavated from 1934 and restored by the Cyprus Department of Antiquities in 1961. Today it hosts summer performances with acoustics ranked among the finest of any open-air theatre worldwide.
