Archaeological Site of Palaepaphos

Ancient city-kingdom at modern Kouklia, home to the principal Sanctuary of Aphrodite in the Aegean world, where pilgrims worshipped from the 12th century BC until the Roman ban on pagan religion in 391 AD. The goddess was venerated not as a statue but as an aniconic conical stone on an open-air altar. First Cypriot site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980.
