Tombs of the Kings, Paphos

A large Hellenistic and Roman necropolis about 2 km north of Paphos harbour in western Cyprus, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. The underground tombs, carved from solid rock from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD, blend Egyptian burial traditions from Alexandria with Greek Doric columns. Tomb Number 3 is the most impressive, featuring an open-air peristyle atrium surrounded by Doric pillars. Despite its name, no kings were buried here; the tombs held aristocrats and high officials of ancient Paphos.
