Vučedol

Vučedol ('Wolf's Valley'), located 5 km downstream from Vukovar on the Danube's right bank in Croatia, is one of Europe's most important Eneolithic sites. Its six-metre-thick cultural layer spans from the Starcevo culture (5500-4300 BC) through the eponymous Vucedol culture (3000-2200 BC), which pioneered innovations such as four-wheel carriages and copper casting. The most famous find is the Vucedol Dove, a bird-shaped vessel discovered at 4.4 m depth that has become a symbol of Croatia. Once home to approximately 3,000 inhabitants, the site held a European Heritage Label recognizing its significance.
