Cerna, Croatia

Cerna is a village and municipality in eastern Croatia, situated between Vinkovci and Zupanja on the rivers Bidj, Bosut, Berava, and Bitulja. A Scordisci archaeological site dating to the late La Tene period was excavated here during rescue excavations in the 1970s and 1980s. The Scordisci were a Celtic tribe who formed as a distinct ethno-political group in the first half of the 3rd century BC and occupied territory from Slavonia to the Iron Gates until Roman integration in the late 1st century BC. The Cerna site was part of a broader Scordisci settlement network in the Vinkovci area, with warrior burials containing La Tene artifacts including ritually deformed weapons found at nearby sites.
