Narona

Narona was an ancient Greek trading post and later major Roman colony in the Neretva valley at present-day Vid, Croatia. Founded as a Greek emporium around 400 BC, it became a Roman colony under Octavian in 33 BC with full civil rights. In 1995, archaeologists discovered an Augusteum temple (built c. 10 BC) containing 16 marble statues of emperors and deities, all deliberately decapitated in the 4th century during Christianization. The Narona Archaeological Museum, opened in 2007, was built in situ over the ruins and displays some 900 artifacts.
