The fourth-largest city in Croatia, situated on the right bank of the Drava River in Slavonia, with origins in Neolithic habitation. A Celtic-Illyrian settlement was established in the 3rd century BC before Roman conquest. Emperor Hadrian elevated the site to the colony of Colonia Aelia Mursa in 133 AD, making it an important center on the Danube Limes. The Battle of Mursa in 351 AD between Magnentius and Constantius II was one of the bloodiest in Roman history. Excavations have revealed Roman hypocausts, city walls, the remains of Hadrian's Bridge, gold coins, and bronze artifacts.
