Praileaitz Cave

Praileaitz Cave (Basque: 'Rock of the Monk') is a Paleolithic cave site in Deba, Gipuzkoa, Basque Country. In August 2006, non-figurative cave paintings were discovered during excavation, consisting of red dot groupings dated to the Lower Magdalenian period, approximately 15,500 years ago. The cave also yielded portable art on pebbles with abstract forms resembling Venus figurines found elsewhere in Paleolithic Europe. The adjacent Sasiola Quarry threatens conservation; a 50-meter protective zone was established by the Basque Government in 2007, though deemed insufficient by the Aranzadi Science Society.
