Atapuerca Mountains

Karstic hill formation near Burgos, northern Spain, containing some of the richest hominin fossil deposits in the world. The Sima del Elefante cave has yielded remains dating to 1.2-1.4 million years ago, the oldest evidence of humans in Western Europe. Gran Dolina preserves Homo antecessor fossils from 800,000 BP showing the earliest known cannibalism. Sima de los Huesos has produced over 5,500 bones from 28 Homo heidelbergensis individuals. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
