Pamplona

Pamplona originated as a Vascones settlement called Iruna before Roman general Pompey established a military camp here circa 75 BC, naming it Pompaelo. Located on the Ab Asturica Burdigalam road, Roman Pompaelo was a civitas stipendiaria in the conventus of Caesaraugusta. Recent excavations in Castle Square revealed Roman baths, among the largest in northern Spain, suggesting the city held greater importance than previously thought. The oldest quarter, Navarreria, corresponds to the Roman city layout.
