Numantia is an ancient Celtiberian settlement on Cerro de la Muela hill near Garray, Soria, Spain. Famous for its role in the Celtiberian Wars, the city resisted Roman forces for twenty years before General Scipio Aemilianus besieged it with 30,000 troops in 133 BC, erecting a 9 km barrier of towers and moats. Most survivors chose suicide over surrender. The excavated site reveals both Celtic and Roman occupation layers, with reconstructed houses, milling stones, and Roman columns. Cervantes later commemorated the siege in his play El Cerco De Numancia.
