Starcevo, located on the Danube's left bank near Pancevo in Serbia, is the type site of the Starcevo culture, representing one of Europe's earliest agricultural societies dating from approximately 5800 BC. Excavations revealed oval and ellipse-shaped underground dwellings (2-6 metres wide), some containing heaters and furnaces, along with tombs, stone tools, bone weapons, and distinctive painted ceramics in white, black, and red. Discovered in 1912, the site was partly damaged by brickyard operations but was added to Serbia's Archaeological Sites of Exceptional Importance list in 1990.
