Pešturina

Pešturina is a cave in the municipality of Niška Banja in southeast Serbia, located southwest of Jelašnica and 20 km southeast of Niš [1]. Archaeological excavations began in 2006, uncovering artifacts from both the Middle and Upper Paleolithic periods [1]. The remains, identified as belonging to the Mousterian culture, have been dated to between 111,000 BP ± 5,000 and 39,000 BP ± 3,000, making Pešturina one of the latest surviving Neanderthal habitats in Europe [1][2]. The cave has been nicknamed the "Serbian Atapuerca" [1].
