Serbia's third-largest city, known in antiquity as Naissus, first occupied by Roman troops in 75-72 BC on land previously inhabited by Thracian Dardanians. Its strategic position where five roads met on the Via Militaris made it a major military and trade hub, becoming capital of Upper Moesia around AD 85. Naissus is the birthplace of Constantine the Great (c. 285 AD), who enriched the city with splendid buildings and the palatial Mediana complex 3 miles outside the walls, featuring extensive mosaic floors. The city was devastated by the Huns in 441 but later partially restored.
