Castlestrange Stone

The Castlestrange Stone is an Iron Age granite boulder (90 cm long, 60 cm high) located near Athleague in County Roscommon, Ireland. Dating to c. 400 BC - 100 AD, it is decorated with curvilinear incised spirals in the La Tene style. It is one of only four such decorated cult stones found in Ireland, alongside the Turoe Stone, Killycluggin Stone, and Derrykeighan Stone. Scholar Ronald Hutton described these stones as enigmatic objects that could represent a stylized head, a phallic symbol, a sacrificial altar, or a union of earth and sky. The La Tene motifs are thought to have influenced early-Christian manuscript illuminations such as the Book of Kells. It is a protected National Monument.
