Hellenistic Theatre of Dion

The Hellenistic Theatre of Dion is the largest structure in the Archaeological Park of Dion at the foot of Mount Olympus in northern Greece. Originally built in the late 5th century BC under King Archelaus as a wooden structure, it was rebuilt from its foundations in the late 3rd century BC after the Aetolian destruction of 220 BC, likely under Philip V. The orchestra measures 26 metres in diameter, and the cavea was unusually built on artificial fill rather than a hillside. Features include Charonian steps and periaktoi mechanisms. Excavated from 1970, it hosts the Olympus Festival since 1991.
