Phaistos is a Bronze Age archaeological site in south-central Crete, home to the second largest Minoan palace after Knossos. First inhabited around 3600 BCE, the first palace was built circa 1900 BC, destroyed by earthquake around 1750 BC, rebuilt, then destroyed again in 1450 BC with the collapse of Minoan civilization. The site is famous for the Phaistos Disc, discovered in 1908, bearing 45 undeciphered symbols on both sides. Phaistos was the wealthiest and most powerful city in southern Crete, controlling the fertile Messara Plain.
