Vertillum

Vertillum is a Gallo-Roman settlement at modern Vertault in Cote-d'Or, eastern France, situated on a plateau spur 20 km northwest of Chatillon-sur-Seine. A Celtic oppidum of about 25 hectares evolved into a prosperous Roman town of 3,000-5,000 inhabitants featuring a disproportionately large forum exceeding one hectare, thermal baths over 600 square meters, hypocaust-heated cellars, and workshops for bronze and iron working. Prosperity from the 1st century AD is attested by abundant Arezzo pottery imports. The town was first destroyed during invasions around 276 AD and abandoned by the 5th century. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1875.
