Whitsbury Castle

Whitsbury Castle Ditches is an Iron Age hillfort near Whitsbury in Hampshire, covering approximately 6.5 hectares on a chalk outcrop. The pear-shaped fort is defended by three ramparts and two ditches, with the original entrance at the southwestern corner now destroyed by a post-medieval manor house. Excavations reveal multi-period use spanning from Mesolithic activity through Bronze Age ranch boundaries (Grim's Ditch runs beneath the fort), Iron Age settlement, and Anglo-Saxon renovation of the defenses. A D-shaped Middle Iron Age hut was discovered during 1960 excavations. The site has been a Scheduled Monument since 1925.
