Figsbury Ring

A multi-period earthwork enclosure on a chalk ridge northeast of Salisbury, Wiltshire, with occupation from roughly 2500 BC. The oval hillfort encloses 6.4 hectares with ramparts 18 metres wide and 3.4 metres high, surrounded by a V-shaped ditch. Within lies an earlier Neolithic henge with a flat-bottomed ditch 14 metres wide and 4.5 metres deep. The 1924 Cunnington excavation recovered animal and human bones plus Beaker and Grooved Ware pottery from the inner ditch. A late Bronze Age sword found here in 1704 is now in the Ashmolean Museum. Owned by the National Trust and designated an SSSI.
