Portus Lemanis

Portus Lemanis (Latin for "Port of the Leman"), also recorded as Lemanae, was a Roman Saxon Shore fort, settlement and port in southern Kent, England. The fortification, dating to the 3rd century AD, occupied a strategic hilltop position overlooking what was then a sea inlet—now the drained Romney Marsh. The site, known locally as Stutfall Castle, sits on private land accessible by public footpath. The modern village of Lympne derives its name directly from this ancient port.
