Reculver

Reculver (Regulbium) is an archaeological site on the north Kent coast where occupation spans from prehistory to the medieval period. A small Roman fort was built here after the Claudian invasion of 43 AD, guarding the northern entrance to the Wantsum Channel. A larger Saxon Shore stone fort was constructed around 210 AD, enclosing 3 hectares with walls 10 feet thick and 20 feet high, garrisoned by the Cohors I Baetasiorum. In 669 AD, King Ecgberht of Kent founded a monastery within the fort's walls, whose twin towers remain a prominent coastal landmark.
