Cow Castle

Cow Castle is a rare slight univallate hillfort on an isolated hilltop 5.75 km west-southwest of Exford in Somerset, within Exmoor National Park. Dating from the Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age (8th-5th centuries BC), the enclosure of approximately 1.2 hectares is defined by a flat-topped rampart bank up to 2 m high externally, with an outer berm of 4.5 m and an inner quarry ditch up to 7 m wide. At least four building platforms have been identified inside. The fort commands a strategic position over the River Barle valley and is a Scheduled Monument, though now on the Heritage at Risk register due to bracken damage.
