Kingston Russell Stone Circle

Kingston Russell Stone Circle, also known as the Gorwell Circle, is the largest surviving stone circle in Dorset, located on a chalk ridge between Abbotsbury and Littlebredy at 189 m above sea level. The late Neolithic or early Bronze Age monument consists of 18 sarsen stones arranged in an oval measuring 24 by 27 m. All stones are now recumbent; records from 1815 note one stone on the southern side was still upright at that time. The site has never been formally excavated. It is a scheduled monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, managed by English Heritage.
