Hell Stone

The Hell Stone is a Neolithic dolmen on Portesham Hill in Dorset, England, originally part of a long barrow measuring 88 feet (27 m) aligned with the midwinter sunrise and summer solstice sunset. The burial chamber features nine uprights supporting a 20-ton capstone measuring 10 x 8 x 2 feet. After the capstone collapsed around 1860, eight men re-erected the stones in 1866, arranging them radially 'like slices of a cake' rather than restoring the original rectangular chamber. The barrow mound is 24 metres long and tapers from 12 to 8 metres wide.
