Waddon Hill

Waddon Hill is the site of a Roman fort near Beaminster in Dorset, England, constructed by the Legio II Augusta under Vespasian around AD 50 during the conquest of the Durotriges tribe. The timber fort occupied a narrow ridge at 210 metres elevation and was abandoned around AD 61, coinciding with the Boudiccan revolt. A bath house to the north contained what may be one of the earliest mosaics in Britain. Graham Webster excavated the surviving half of the fort between 1959 and 1969, with 19th-century quarrying having destroyed the other half.
