Chalbury Hillfort

Chalbury is an Iron Age hillfort near Bincombe in Dorset, England, enclosing approximately 8.5 acres at 380 feet above sea level with commanding views over Weymouth Bay. The defenses consist of a single rampart with external and internal limestone retaining walls around a soil and stone core, separated from a flat-bottomed ditch by a 5-9 foot berm. Excavated by Miss M. Whitley in 1939, the interior revealed over 30 hut platforms arranged around the perimeter, at least 20 storage pits, and scattered disarticulated human remains suggesting exposure of the dead. Finds date primarily to Early Iron Age 'A' (from the 5th century BC), with limited Late Bronze Age and Romano-British material.
