Rudston Monolith

The tallest megalith in the United Kingdom at nearly 8 metres high with a circumference of 5 metres, standing in the churchyard of All Saints Church in Rudston, East Riding of Yorkshire. Dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, the stone was hewn from Moorstone grit quarried near Scarborough and transported roughly 40 miles, likely by river. It stands at the convergence of three cursus monuments, suggesting it was a focal point for prehistoric assembly or ceremony. The name Rudston derives from Old English 'rood-stane' meaning cross-stone.
