Branodunum

Branodunum was a Roman fort east of modern Brancaster in Norfolk, built in the 230s AD and later incorporated into the Saxon Shore fortification system. Its Celtic-derived name may mean "fort of the raven." The rectangular fort with rounded corners enclosed 2.56 hectares behind a 3 m wide wall with internal corner turrets and a V-shaped ditch. The Notitia Dignitatum records it garrisoned first by Gaulish infantry, then by Dalmatian cavalry (Equites Dalmatae Branodunenses). A 2012 Time Team excavation revealed previously unknown granaries, barrack blocks, and a possible bath house inside the walls.
