Buzeyir Cave

Buzeyir Cave is a Paleolithic archaeological site on the left bank of the Zuvandchay River atop Delikli-Dash Mountain at 1,640 m elevation in Lerik Rayon, Azerbaijan. Discovered in 1985 by A. Jafarov during an expedition in the Lankaran region, the cave measures 12 m long, 5-6 m wide, and 2.5 m high. Excavations in 1985, 1990, and 2007 revealed six cultural layers containing stone tools and sharpened animal bones from the Mousterian culture, suggesting human habitation 60,000-80,000 years ago. In 2002, European scholars including Henry de Lumley conducted research at the site under the INTAS programme.
