Maiden Castle is an Iron Age hill fort in Cheshire, one of only seven fortified settlements in the county[1]. Constructed around 600 BC, it was occupied until the Roman conquest of Britain in the 1st century AD[1]. The Cornovii tribe are recorded as occupying the surrounding area during this period, though their presence lacks archaeological verification due to an absence of distinctive pottery or metalwork[1]. The site has since been quarried and used for military exercises[1]. It is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, owned by the National Trust, and open to visitors despite being classified as at high risk from erosion[1].
