Chester Roman Amphitheatre

Chester Amphitheatre is a Roman amphitheatre in Chester, Cheshire, northwest England, managed by English Heritage and designated as a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument[1]. The ruins exposed are those of a large stone amphitheatre, similar to those found in Continental Europe[1]. Although long believed a smaller wooden amphitheatre existed on the site, excavations since 1999 have shown the wooden grillage is the base of the seating[1]. Today, only the northern half is exposed; the southern half remains covered by buildings, some of which are themselves listed[1].
