Berth Hill

Berth Hill is an Iron Age multivallate hillfort near the village of Maer in Staffordshire, about 8 km south-west of Newcastle-under-Lyme, and a Scheduled Monument. Sited on a sandstone outcrop at the south-east edge of Maer Hills, the irregular defences measure 320 m by 150 m, enclosing roughly 3.75 hectares. The earth-and-stone rampart is up to 15 m wide; on the less steep northern slope a second outer rampart was added. Two original entrances survive: an inturned entrance in the south-west and another at the north end of the east defences. Large multivallate hillforts of this type are nationally rare, with only about 50 examples recorded across England.
