Deva Victrix

Deva Victrix was a legionary fortress and settlement in the Roman province of Britannia, located on the site of modern Chester, England [1]. The fortress was originally built by Legio II Adiutrix during the 70s AD as Roman forces advanced north against the Brigantes [1][2]. It was later rebuilt and expanded by Legio XX Valeria Victrix, which gave the fortress its lasting name [1]. A major reconstruction took place in the early 3rd century [1]. The legion remained stationed at Deva until the late 4th or early 5th century, when the fortress fell into disuse as Roman authority in Britain declined [1][3].
