Cawthorn Roman Camps is a well-preserved Roman military site 6 km north of Pickering in the North York Moors, dating to the late 1st-early 2nd century AD (c. 80-120 AD). The earthworks comprise two forts and an unusually shaped temporary camp: Camp C has an elongated coffin-like shape (300 x 850 ft) with three gateways protected by claviculae, while Fort D features ramparts 4-5 m high. Once thought to be practice works, recent reassessment suggests permanent military occupation as part of a network controlling northern England. Excavations in the 1920s revealed pottery and glass beads from two short-term occupations.
