Carrawburgh (Roman name Brocolitia) is an auxiliary fort on Hadrian's Wall built around 130 AD to fill a gap between the forts at Housesteads and Chesters. The 3.5-acre fort housed approximately 500 soldiers from auxiliary units including cohorts from Aquitania, Batavia, and Tungria. Its most notable features are three Roman sanctuaries beyond the southwest corner: a Temple of Mithras built c. 200 AD and rebuilt four times before falling into disuse around 350 AD, and Coventina's Well, a shrine to a local water goddess where 1876 excavations recovered roughly 16,000 coins, ten altars, and sculptural fragments. The fort remains largely unexcavated, preserving significant subsurface remains for future archaeological research.
