Lees Hall Roman Camp

Lees Hall Roman Camp is a Roman temporary camp near Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, approximately 1 km south of the Wall and 680 metres south of the Vallum. One of over 40 temporary camps recorded near the Wall, it is uniquely distinguished by an outwork surrounding the main defences, suggesting prolonged occupation of at least one season rather than a short-lived marching camp. The site survives as earthworks with ramparts averaging 0.3 metres high and external ditches up to 0.4 metres deep. It may have been a predecessor to the nearby fortlet guarding the Haltwhistle Burn crossing, known to have been unoccupied before 105 AD.
