Axus

Axus (or Axos) was an ancient city on Crete, located inland on the slopes of Mount Ida with its harbour at Astale. The settlement appears in Mycenaean Linear B tablets as e-ko-so, confirming its existence by the 2nd millennium BC [1]. During the classical period, it functioned as a polis (city-state) [2]. According to ancient sources, the city was situated on a river that gave its name to Axus, and Cyrenaean traditions claimed Battus, the founder of Cyrene, was the son of Phronimne, daughter of King Etearchus of Axus [1].
